What Deserves Your Best?

For years, I judged a productive day by what I accomplished.

How much I handled.

How many problems I solved.

How much I checked off the list.

But over time, I learned that getting more done and giving my best to what matters most are not the same thing.

Every day, we are spending something limited:

our time,

our energy,

our attention,

our health,

our emotional capacity.

And whatever receives those things is being prioritized, whether we intended it or not.

This is where capable women can get pulled off course.

We respond to what is urgent.

We take care of what other people need.

We handle what is right in front of us.

Then one day we realize we have given away our best energy before we ever reached what mattered most.

I know that pattern.

There were seasons in my corporate career when work received my sharpest thinking, my longest hours, and the best of my energy.

My family often received what remained.

My health received what remained.

My dreams received what remained.

Even my time with God sometimes received what remained.

I don’t look back on that with shame.

I look back with greater understanding.

Because stewardship is not only about deciding what to stop carrying.

It is also about deciding what deserves our best.

And that can be one of the hardest parts of leadership.

The things that matter most are not always the loudest.

Your health may never feel urgent until it becomes urgent.

Your marriage may not come with deadlines.

Your spiritual life may not interrupt your calendar.

Your calling may wait quietly while you keep responding to everything else.

But quiet does not mean unimportant.

Sometimes the things that matter most are the easiest to postpone because they are not demanding us in the moment.

That is why I’ve been asking myself a different question:

What deserves the best of me in this season?

My faith?

My health?

My marriage?

My family?

Developing the people I lead?

A responsibility only I can fulfill?

The work God keeps bringing back to my heart?

We cannot give our best to everything.

And that is exactly why discernment matters.

Not everything deserves equal access to our time.

Not everything deserves our clearest thinking.

Not everything deserves our emotional energy.

Faithful leadership requires us to protect what matters before something less important consumes it.

So perhaps the question this week is not simply:

What do I need to release?

Perhaps it is:

Am I giving my best to what matters most—or giving what matters most whatever is left?
